intelligence is a lamp · it lights a circle, not a room

The Well-Lit
Room

Smart people make terrible decisions at a rate that should embarrass the idea of smartness. Not because the thinking is weak. Because it is pointed at the only part of the room with a light on.

Every instrument for measuring a mind is built from problems that can be scored: fixed rules, a boundary, one agreed answer. Whether to take the job, move across the world, have the child: none of those.

We built a careful ruler for one class of thing, and assumed the number described the person.

More intelligence does not help here, and the reason is the whole problem. Watch yourself make a list of pros and cons. The columns come out close, and then one of them quietly grows, because the answer was in the room before the list was. The list was never a scale. It was a defence.

So a quick mind does not merely arrive at the wrong answer. It furnishes it, and meets every objection before you can raise one.

The Patient Fire argued that temperament is a dose you were handed, not a virtue you earned. A person is issued two instruments: a processor, speed with symbols, and a regulator, how loudly the alarm rings. Nobody checks that they arrived at the same setting.

So the world is full of magnificent engines on a chassis no one inspected, steered by a nervous system that panics early and rationalises beautifully.

Skill is intelligence multiplied by a closed loop: act, get scored, correct. Chess returns a verdict in seconds, so twenty years of it makes a master. A life returns nothing for fifteen years, then something unattributable.

Remove the scoring and the loop still turns, but what accumulates is not accuracy. It is conviction. The unscored decades make a person who is not more right, only much harder to argue with.

The species has the same profile. The Accidental Eden made the case that the Holocene was a truce we were handed, not a competence we developed: eleven thousand mild years, and we mistook the lighting for our eyesight.

Climate is not failing because it is hard. Fusion is hard. It is failing because the rules move and the loop closes in a century. So we turn back toward the light, solve the solvable piece brilliantly, and file it as progress.

we keep solving the part that scores us

The keys are in the dark

This is not an argument against being smart. It is an argument about the exchange rate. Speed inside the circle is where exams and careers and arguments are won, so we keep converting our lives into circle-shaped problems.

What helps out here is not horsepower. Name which kind of problem you are in. Make it score you sooner: small, reversible, soon. Ask someone standing at a different angle, because they can see your face and you cannot.

We call it intelligence. It is a lamp. It shows one circle in brilliant detail and tells you nothing about the room. The keys were never under it.
