If history's greatest leaps are serendipitous, can we really command climate change to vanish on a deadline?
For 99% of human existence—the Pleistocene—Earth was a violent, erratic weather machine. Volcanic super-eruptions blotted out the sun, glaciers moved in decades, and severe droughts turned river basins to dust.
Pleistocene humans had modern brains and language, yet built no cities and left no written history. They spent their lives running from weather disasters and killing each other over survival.
Roughly 11,700 years ago, Earth entered the Holocene—an epoch of unprecedented relative stability. While punctuated by minor shifts like the 8.2-kiloyear cooling event, mean global temperatures settled into a far gentler climate envelope compared to the wild Pleistocene swings.
Agriculture was born not because humans grew smarter, but because the weather allowed crops to stay put. We built cities, compounded science, and mistook this rare planetary truce for our natural right.
